Michael Turner Askew

Michael Turner Askew was born April 4, 1949 and passed peacefully into the loving arms of his Eternal Father on April 20, 2018. He is survived by his mother, Olivia Stephens; daughters Michelin Holmes, and Elizabeth Askew; grandson Spencer Askew; sister and brother-in-law Caroline Stephens Dooling and John Dooling; nieces Brittany Dunn and Page Cline Porter; and nephews Kevin Dooling, Michael Cline, and Jason Askew. He is predeceased by his father, Turner Bates Askew, brother Nolan Lynn Askew, and stepfather James A. Stephens.

Michael was a life-long resident of the Bossier/Shreveport area and a graduate of Airline High School Class of ’67, where he was a proud member of the Big Blue Band from Viking Land. He bravely served his country as a volunteer in the United States Army 1st Infantry Division during the Vietnam War as a combat Medic, where he saved countless lives.  He was awarded the Bronze Star and Army Commendation medals, both with V device for heroism and bravery under enemy fire. Upon his return home, ‘Doc’ Askew continued helping the sick, injured and defenseless by working as an EMT for Shreveport ambulance services, as a volunteer police officer, and in security services. In the early 80’s, he reenlisted in the Army Reserve and completed training to become a Licensed Practical Nurse, where he worked as a private nurse, as well as for the VA Hospital serving his fellow veterans. In more recent years, he took charge of caring for his mother until his own illness confined him to his home.

Though the horrors of war were never far from the surface, he always had a funny story or joke to tell and loved to talk, laugh, and ‘cut up.’ He had such a big heart and was truly selfless, helping anyone in need, even to his own personal detriment. Fishing, shooting, gun and coin collecting, reading, connecting with former Army buddies, and taking trips to Andrews, NC all brought him great joy in retirement, as did spending time with his grandson.

Michael was a deeply devoted Christian and had tremendous knowledge of the Bible, as he attended Seminary and briefly considered the ministry. He was truly at peace and embraced his faith wholeheartedly as he neared the end. He requested cremation upon death, as did his brother before him. His family will hold a private memorial and life celebration with his final resting place being Arlington National Cemetery.

Michael’s family is eternally grateful to Cortrice Hossa and Fannie Dixon for their care and support during his lengthy illness, along with Amedisys Hospice. With their help, Michael was able to live out his final days at home as he wished, with his forever-faithful kitty, LG.
