Don Young

d. January 5, 1929

Don "Scotty" Young was born in Glasgow, Scotland January 5, 1929, and as a youngster often sang about "The Yellow Rose of Texas," never believing that he would immigrate to the United States and live only a few miles from Texas. However, in 1956 he did leave Scotland for Bossier City, Louisiana to begin living the American Dream, and to be closer to his sister. It took him three days to find work, and he said that was the longest period he had ever been without a job. He began working for Linwood Cobb's Garage as an automobile mechanic, and rose to shop foreman. In 1964 he took a giant leap and left Cobb's to open "Scotty's Garage," where he worked or spent his days until his illness made that impossible. The year 1964 was also significant because he purchased the family pet, Spring, a Wire Fox Terrier. Don and Spring went to the Red River Obedience Training Club, and became one of the top handler/dog combinations in the U.S. Don became an Obedience Judge for the American Kennel Club in 1968, and judged trials throughout the U.S. and Bermuda. He judged his last trial in July 2007, just short of his 40th anniversary. But by far his favorite pastime was being involved in the lives of his children and later his grandchildren. "Grampy" seldom missed an activity, unless a dog show had him out of town or he was too ill to attend. Don "Scotty" Young gave into his cancer October 24, 2007, exactly the way that he had planned to. You can participate in the continued celebration of his life during family visitation at Boone Funeral Home Friday October 26 from 6 - 8 p.m. A funeral service will be led by Rev. Doug de Graffenried and Rev. Katie McKay at Asbury United Methodist Church Saturday, October 27 at 1:00 p.m. Graveside services will follow at RoseNeath Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Roger Cyr, III, John O'Hara, O.K. Friesen, Joe Williams, Jr., Randy Johnson, and Tony Cyr. "Scotty" was survived by his wife of 56 years, Jane Greenwood Young, daughter Dawn Young, son Brian Young and his wife Lynne Cyr Young, and their daughters Lauren and Miranda. Don believed that you did things as they came to you, never be caught saying "I wish I had…" He believed that you should always do the right thing, and to do it well. And he believed that you should give all you have, because someone needs you to do that. Memorial gifts to honor him can be made to Asbury United Methodist Church, Bossier City, Sanctuary Fund or to The Seeing Eye, Inc., P.O. Box 375, Morristown, NJ 07963-0375, an organization that trains guide dogs for the blind.
