Shreveport - Iva ?Nicky? Shafer Beckett, a long-time resident of Marshall, TX was born on June 23, 1916 in Austin, TX and passed away January 25, 2012 at Live Oak in Shreveport, LA. She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph C. Shafer and Mary D. (Crittendon) Shafer; sisters, Mildred Teague, Joyce Johnson, Verna Underwood, Bonnie Shafer, Faye Ehrlich, and one brother Joe ?Sonny? Shafer. She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Beckett; grandchildren, Brian Beckett and Jennifer Whittington; great-grandson, Preston Beckett Walton. Nicky loved nature especially birds, flowers, and gardening. Her beautiful flower arrangements won many awards and led her to be a national flower judge. She had the honor of being named Flower Show Chairman of the Marshall, TX Garden Club in 1951. She was proud to be the first in the family to complete high school, and went on to complete Business College. In 1984 she opened ?The Book End? in Marshall, TX where she sold personally created flower arrangements in addition to books, home décor, and fine collectibles. Nicky was a championship tennis player and amateur women?s golfer. She was a world traveler and had the opportunity to visit many beautiful places. She was a faithful attendee of Faith Bible Church in Marshall and created the floral arrangements for the altar every Sunday. A private memorial was held.
