John was born in Houston, Texas to James Mallie Martin and Bernice Lucille Blocker Martin. After a long battle with Alzheimer's disease, John went to be with Jesus on December 10, 2024.
John had an interesting childhood as his dad was 66 when he was born and his mother was in her forties. They lived in quite a few places and traveled often by train; John's dad introduced him to drawing while sitting in many train stations. His dad also home-schooled John and his sister, Nancy Martin Lubofsky. Due to his upbringing, John could be old fashioned and strict, but he was a gentleman to the core! He loved God, his wife Honey, and his family. He was always willing to help someone to the best of his ability.
As well as a talented sketch artist, John had a wonderful talent for music; his mother taught him to sing harmony to Silent Night, and he loved playing the guitar and singing- he did both well. John and Honey spent many wonderful Wednesdays playing and singing with Candy Watts, Q. Hood, and Guy Bradford. His love and talent for music was with him almost to the end. He was also able to sew and could fix just about anything, including a grandchild’s beloved stuffed monkey that needed many surgeries! He was patient and precise when it came to building things. Papa John, as his grandchildren knew him, was blessed with many talents.
John is survived by his wife and best friend, Honey Hood Martin. He devoted his life to making her happy, and he succeeded. They shared 27 wonderful years of life together.
John is also survived by his loved children: James Joshua Martin and wife Shannon, their children Addie, Ellie, and Avery; daughter, Hallie Cecille Martin; daughter, Amanda Leigh Martin and her daughter Mia. Josh, Hallie, and Leigh all played soccer with their dad's support, and they enjoyed camping trips with him growing up. He was proud of their accomplishments in life.
Mr. Martin is also survived by his beloved stepchildren: Melissa Chumbley Fisher and husband Josh, their children Mary Clare and Lizzie; Mandy Chumbley Crow and husband Kelley, and their children Aaden and Caroline.
He is survived by one sister, Nancy Martin Lubofsky- with whom he shared a special bond- and his two nephews, David Lubofsky and wife Kristina, and their son J.T., and Daniel Lubofsky and wife Tammy. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Clare Hood, brother-in-law F.Q. Hood, Jr. and wife Sheri, and his sister-in-law Stacy Weber and her husband Rob.
Thanks to Gladys Walker for her many Mondays of bringing lunch and treating John with such compassion. A special thanks to Jennifer Hall for her unending love and dedication as she spent many days with John. Those two didn't stay in one place long! You would find them taking a walk, at church, or eating a barbecue sandwich!
Also, thanks to Willis Knighton Hospice for the special care provided by Lucie Grove, the spiritual support from Kendall Holley, and the personal care given by Terica Hall. Also, a very special thank you to Melissa, Mandy, and their families as they supported their mom, Honey, during John's long illness.
