James M. Guiden Jr. passed away peacefully on January 12, 2025. He was born in Gloster Louisiana to parents Rev. James M. and Lenora Guiden, as the younger of eight children.
In 1951, James enlisted in the US Navy. He served on the USS Hooper Island. The USS Hooper Island was a decorated ship during WWII and the Korean War. It was part of the 7th Fleet and during his deployments aboard that vessel, the crew was subjected to severe weather, months at sea and famously assisted in the evacuation of 300,000 Vietnamese Citizens from North and South Vietnam when they were about to be turned over to the Communist Regime. During his distinguished military career, he received the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Korean War Service Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal. November 10, 2018, he participated as an honoree in the Veteran’s Honor Ceremony in Bossier, Louisiana and the Veteran’s Parade on November 11, in Shreveport, Louisiana.
After an honorable discharge, James settled in Portland, Oregon. There he raised a family. He was highly active in the American Federation of Government Employees and served as the first African American Regional Officer. He was always happy to welcome family members to share the beautiful Northwest. While in Portland, he thoroughly enjoyed the Northwest outdoor life which included boating, fishing, and rodeos. He and his wife owned a catering business. It was a family affair where they sold Louisiana meat pies and turkey legs at local festivals. He was also involved in civic activities and well-known in the city and neighborhood.
After raising their family, James and Verdell moved to Natchitoches, Louisiana. He did not slow down. He became a self-taught oenologist (wine maker), heavily in civic and family activities. James was always willing to help and share his years of knowledge and experience. He will be missed solely as an exemplary role model and patriarch of his family.
James was preceded in death by his parents and siblings. Those left to cherish his memory: His wife, his daughters, grandchildren and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
