Harrel Wadley Mulkey, Jr., a 5th generation Shreveporter, was born on January 15, 1926 to Harrel Wadley Mulkey and Georgie Naylor Mulkey, in the old Schumpert Sanitarium on Margaret Place , in Shreveport. He died at home on Monday July 23rd. A Memorial Celebration of his life will be held at The Church of the Holy Cross, Episcopal, 875 Cotton Street at Texas Avenue; at 4:00 PM, on Wednesday July 25th, with The Reverend Mary Richard officiating. Harrel was an alumnus of Byrd High School and Centenary College and a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He graduated from the New York School of Interior Design and was a founding member and past President of the Louisiana District Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers and President of Friend, Piper & Mulkey, Interior Design. He was a Licensed Building Contractor, who designed and built many of Shreveport?s finest homes. Harrel was also an Antiquarian of note, the co-owner of The London Gallery, Antiques. He served his Country in the Army Air Force, during World War II. While stationed at Nichols Field, near Manila, in the Philippine Islands, his ?Ground Control Approach? team was able to bring into a safe landing, on a foggy night, the first plane load of released American prisoners of war, from Japan. He was predeceased by his parents, his former wife, Nancy Glass Mulkey and his brother, Larry Austin Mulkey. He is survived by his son, Randolph Ellis Mulkey and wife, Lila Atkins Mulkey of Santa Fe, NM, three granddaughters; Sarah Mulkey Hussion and husband Tim and Claire Mulkey Bourne and husband Mark, of Denver, CO, Amy Atkins Mulkey, of San Diego, CA, a great-granddaughters Lily Mulkey Hussion and Claire Amy Hussion; sisters in-law, Virginia Mulkey, Mary Lindsey and Jan Glass; nieces, Lauren Mulkey, Michelle Perkins and Emily Parrett. His adopted son and Life Partner of 25 years, John Andrew Veuleman, who was his amazing care giver, also survives. The family gives very special thanks to Dr. Oliver Sartor, Dr. Bob Massingill and Dr. Dan Moller, for their devoted care and support. Honorary Pall Bearers will be Sam Lucero, Casey Simpson, Bob Sorensen, Jon Pike, Wesly Garrison, Scott Sealy and Allen Penniman. In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be sent, in Harrel?s name, to the Church of The Holy Cross, or the Charity of your choice. ?Don?t cry for me, for I have lived a good life and fought a good fight! When God saw that I was getting tired and a cure was not to be, he put his arms around me and whispered, "Come home with me." So grieve a while, if you must, but be comforted by The God, in whom we trust!?
