On Friday, January 29 Carol Elizabeth Wood passed away at the age of 60. She graduated from Airline High School with honors then attended Northeast Louisiana, now U of Louisiana – Monroe.
Carol was preceded in her passing by her father, Cecil Washington Wood, mother, Frances Louise Sheffield Wood, and brother Donald Edward Wood. Left to cherish her memory are her sisters Sandra Leat and Julia Sue French, brother Cecil “Bill” Wood, sister-in-law Anita Wood and a host of nephews and nieces.
Her struggles were many after suffering a severe head injury in an auto accident at the age of 21. As a result of her brain injury she spent 6 months in a coma and survived when few expected her to recover. She did survive but struggled with short term memory issues and an inability to speak. Balance issues confined her to a wheelchair but she learned to regain some mobility. The brain injury made communication difficult until she learned to use a letter board to spell out words. She suffered from mood swings but was always quick to apologize and offer a hug to those around here after an outburst. She came to accept her condition but she never lost her sense of independence or her sense of humor. After many years of rehabilitation she was able to move to an assisted living facility with help from dedicated care givers.
The family would like to express their appreciation to care givers, Reba, Patricia, Josie and Mary Ann. They knew Carol better than anyone and we always had the confidence that Carol was in capable and loving hands. Highland Place of Shreveport began to care for in her later years. She received excellent care and became family to the nurses and staff. The family would like to express our sincere appreciation to the nurses, aides, and staff at Highland Place of Shreveport. In lieu of flowers please make a gift to the charity of your choice. Due to Covid-19 there will be no graveside services.
